President Rodrigo Duterte has announced that he will retire from politics last Saturday, October 2, 2021.
“In obedience to the will of the people who after all placed me in the presidency many years ago, I now say sa mga kababayan ko, sundin ko ang gusto ninyo and today. I announce my retirement from politics,” Duterte stated in his announcement.
President Duterte delivered the statement as he accompanied Senator Bong Go in filing for Go’s Certificate of Candidacy to run as Vice President in the 2022 National Elections.
The President told the media that he made this decision based on “the universal sentiment of the Filipino as reflected in the different surveys and in many forums and, well, talks and meetings to discuss what I should do in my life.”
“The overwhelming sentiment of the Filipino is that I am not qualified and it would be a violation of the Constitution to circumvent the law, the spirit of the Constitution,” Duterte added.
President Duterte also wished Senator Go “the best and good luck”, who he accompanied to the Sofitel Hotel in Pasay City as the senator filed his Certificate of Candidacy to run for Vice President in the 2022 National Elections. Matthew Perez // Image from The Economist
