Ped Xing XI: Conquering Independence was held last January 18 and 19, 2020 at the University of the Philippines (UP) Diliman Palma Hall, where Marist School placed as the second overall best school against 15 others.
Marist sent delegates to compete in the two-day event consisting of the following contests: debate, quiz bee, English and Filipino essay writing, digital poster making, extemporaneous speech, and policy making.
Laurence Alfonso and Marcus Bellosillo bagged golds in the Filipino essay writing and extemporaneous speech, respectively, while Vince Dato, Aaron Camposano, and Mark De Leon won second place in policy making.
Additionally, the school landed fifth place in the quiz bee and debate competitions.
This year’s theme spoke of the current issues surrounding Philippine Independence, with seminars prior to the contests that discussed the technicality and concepts of the country’s legal sovereignty and the discipline of political science.
Senatoriable Jose Manuel “Chel” Diokno of the 2019 midterm election, UP Institute for Maritime Affairs director Atty. Jay Batongbacal, and Philippine Political Science Journal editor Prof. Maria Ela Atienza, PhD served as speakers in the event organized by the UP Political Society.
